Inlays and Onlays

Dentists always use Inlays or onlays when repairing the biting surface of the tooth. They can be made from gold, porcelain, ceramic resin or composite. Porcelain has become the choice of many dentists since it has potential of matching with the natural colour of the patients. An inlay lies inside the cusp tips of your tooth. They are made to fit the specific cavity and later they are cemented into the particular place. Onlay is reconstruction that is extensive since it covers one or more cusps. Both inlays and onlays are applied in two visits to the dentist.

During the first visit, the decay or the old filling is removed. An impression of the tooth is made by the dentist and later sent to a dental laboratory. The impression of the tooth is used to construct gold onlay/inlay or custom made porcelain. Temporally sealant is being placed on the tooth by the dentist and the second appointment is scheduled. The temporally sealant is removed during the second visit. The dentist first ensures that the onlay/inlay does not interfere with your bite. By the use of strong bonding resin, the dentist bonds the onlay/inlay into the tooth and later polishes smooth.

The difference between inlays and onlays is that the inlays are placed between the cusps of teeth while onlays are placed onto the cusps of the teeth. Onlays deals with one or more damaged cusps. Inlays deal with the damage between cusps of teeth. Onlay helps prevents the spread of tooth decay. Onlay helps in preserving the structure of the tooth since it is placed over the tooth. The need of dental crowns surgeries, dental bridges and dental implants will be avoided. Sinus lift is a pontic graft found between the lifted facial bony lid and the antral mucosa.
